All Saints' Day - November 1st
November 1 is All Saints’ Day. Because it is
the convergence of several liturgical threads - one of the seven principal
feasts of the church year; one of the four days recommended for the
administration of baptism; and our parish’s patronal feast-All Saint’s Day
will once again be celebrated with great joy in our parish.
As a principal feast, on this day we commemorate all the Christian saints,
known and unknown, who “lived not only in ages past,” but are also alive
today and “who love to do Jesus’ will.” The Collect of the Day expresses
this theology: “Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one
communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord:
Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly
living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for
those who truly love you . . . .”
As a day especially reserved for baptism, we will welcome new members into
“Christ’s Body the Church.” Baptism is “indissoluble” and is “full
initiation” into the Church. It is fitting that on this day we will baptize
several and welcome them into the household of God. No doubt, the Saints of
God will be present cheering on these newest members of the Church.
All Saints’ Day is also the occasion for our patronal feast, in effect our
parish birthday. We will remember those who were moved by the Holy Spirit in
1870 to gather together to worship and begin this parish; for the various
ministries of this parish, ministries that have transformed the lives of
persons in our community and beyond; and especially for all who have come to
this place seeking God or a deeper knowledge of God.
Our special day will conclude Sunday evening as we gather at 5:30 in the
Parish Hall to celebrate our birthday and the official kickoff of the
capital and stewardship campaigns. Be sure to join us then for a wonderful
and festive time together.
