Greetings All Saints’,
Remember: I am learning the "how to" of being clergy, and specifically a
deacon, in the time I am with you. As an over-achiever, it is very difficult
for me to find myself as less than perfect. My hope is that a few of you
also suffer from this malady. I can already see that God has placed me at
your parish so I would have the perfect environment to be formed for my
ministry. It is here that the rough edges will be ground down. It is also
where I will learn humility. Through this journey of discernment and then as
a postulant for ordination, I have learned that "humility" isn't necessarily
thinking lesser of myself, but thinking of myself less often.
I have already had my first lesson in "humility." Several choir members
informed me that if my sermons go too long, they will stand up and break
into song (from the Sound of Music), "So long farewell, auf weidersehen /
adieu, adieu, adieu, to you and you and you." Talk about not taking myself
too seriously! The levity of their performance, complete with hand gestures
and dancing, reminded me that my formation is not my responsibility alone;
it is yours and the Holy Spirit's also! As such, God will use us to help
bring the kingdom of heaven closer to the sick, poor, lonely and
disenfranchised. I find this exhilarating!
Several of you have asked about my schedule. I plan to publish my hours in
the church newsletter. In addition, you are welcome to e-mail me at
lynn@allsaintstupelo.org for an appointment. The only downside I
have found to being placed at All Saints’ is living 90 minutes away.
However, even the drive to Tupelo is blessed time for me. I think of you
often during the week and pray for you. I look forward to getting to know
each of you and learning as much as I can about your various ministries.
Christ Peace, Lynn
